My fan died for the 3rd time. First two I took the motor out and cleaned it and that sorted it, this time not so easy.

I noticed some smoke come from the vents a few days before it died this time. I have also taken the resistor out and the fuse on top still lets current through so that hasn't gone. Can the resistor itself blow without damaging the fuse?
No wires seem damaged or melted. Is there an easy way to see if the motor itself works on its own? Or any other ideas?

Because the fan is inverted it sits on it's bottom bearing, eventually it sieves and smoke as the plastic overheats. Probably need a new fan, got mine from Ebay, came boxed for a Grande Punto.
