1.3 Turbo replacement

I've had my 1.3 Corsa go into limp mode twice in the past month or so, so when I had to take it to a mechanic for unrelated reasons I asked them to run a diagnostic to find out what the problem is. I was hoping it was just the EGR valve but I'm told the code reader came up with a fault code for the turbo. I'm not exactly sure what he said the problem was but he said I'd need the turbo replaced. He said it'd be about ÂŁ500 for a brand new one (not sure if that's with or without labour) which I wouldn't be surprised about as it is the turbo. I just want to make sure he isn't f*cking me over. He also said I could get a used one fitted but he never gave me a price as I won't be able to get it fixed just yet.

My question is whether the ÂŁ500 is a realistic price for a brand new turbo? If so, is it a good idea to just get a used part fitted and how much cheaper that'd be.
If it's a bad idea and I have to spend the ÂŁ500 I was thinking about getting some kind of performance (?) turbo. Obviously I don't wanna put a wind turbine in there and I'm not sure if ÂŁ500 would be enough for any kinda turbo kit anyway, but I'm just hoping for some suggestions or ideas. The engine/transmission is fully stock AFAIK so I'm not trying to make 200bhp with a huge turbo. Either something for a bit of fun, or perhaps something that's more efficient than the stock one if I must spend half a grand on the car.

Thanks!

Take it to another garage and don't mention the turbo.

How is the car running?
It’s running fine but I rarely have to go over 40. But the 2 times I’ve had to lately, it went into limp mode twice. I will take it to a different garage and have them put it on the scanner. But this guy said changing the turbo is a **** job and he didn’t even wanna do it so he might not actually be scamming me. Also I’ll find out whether they cleared the codes or not when I pick up the car today.

I haven't a clue what the codes mean but i would take it to another garage for a second opinion.

It might just need -

Yeah, he said the boost controller is stuck and it doesn’t move when you start the engine. Therefore, the car makes too much boost, hence the limp mode. But they also said they’ll need to take the whole turbo off regardless as everything is behind it.

If I take it to another garage do I just tell them the code or have them run a diagnostic too? And also the invoice says something about the heater plugs too is that a problem?

Thanks

I would take it to another garage and say nothing about what the other found then you will get to the truth.

Removing the turbo doesn't look like that big of a job if you have a garage and tools i think the garage maybe making out its a bigger job than it is -

I will do thanks! Probably only next month though

Let us know how you get on.
I managed to find the time to take it to a different garage, they put the scanner on and also found high boost pressure. He said that the actuator is shut all the time, thus the high boost pressure. He recommended me a garage so I'll go in tomorrow and ask for a quote to either fix it or replace it. I assume it'll cost me at least a few hundred pound if I'm getting it replaced which I'm not sure I want to do. I rarely go fast enough for the limp mode to be a problem and the car has about 115,000 miles so I don't wanna spend ÂŁ500 to replace the turbo just for something else to go wrong 2 days later and spend another few hundred quid on that.

Having had my bad experience i wouldn't touch another 1.3 with a bargepole if its going to cost ÂŁ500 and you are worried about other things going wrong you may want to look at a 1.2 petrol there are lots about.
What experiences have you had?
My insurance ends in August so I'd like to keep it at least until then to avoid extra charges (black box and all that), and when it ends I'll either buy something else that I can afford insurance on and is a bit more fun, or might go for a 1.2 like you said if this costs too much to repair.

Thanks for you response!

Also were the bigger infotainment screens a factory option? Because if I bought a 1.2 SXI I'd prefer to have the bigger screen and the alternative knobs for the fan speeds and temperatures. It's an odd thing to be picky about but I really don't like knobs on the cars with the small screens

I don't really know much about the different models all i do know is the water logged ECU on the diesel models is a big problem (google it there are hundreds of posts about it) if the drain holes haven't been kept clear there is a very good chance you may end up in the same place as the rest of us so if its going to cost you a lot of money to fix the turbo consider the added cost of replacing the ECU (if it is possible) and the ball ache involved in doing it.

I have been accused of going over the top about the ECU problem by one member here as i post the link in every thread from diesel owners i consider it to be a worth while warning to any members and guests searching for info about the 1.3 diesel i only wish i had seen it before i bought mine i would have bought a petrol.
Ah yes, I've seen your thread before but I've never really bothered to look through it before now. I'll ask them tomorrow to get me a quote on clearing the drainage holes as well as replacing the turbo as I don't believe me ECU has been damaged. Are the 1.2 and 1.4 models naturally aspirated?

It's been a while, but it turns out my actuator was stuck. After being linked a guide on a different forum on how to get it unstuck, I have just managed to get it moving again and my issue seems to have been fixed. Was kind of a bitch to do, but at least I'm not paying hundreds of pounds to have it replaced by a garage.

Hi how did you get it moving again as mine is stuck, thankyou
Hi mate, not sure if it'll let me post links but here you go anyway:

When you're doing it make sure you use the 'Penetrant' variable of WD40 rather than the basic one
