Thanks for that. It never used to do this so something has changed not sure if it's something to be concerned about or not.

 

Sounds like a dry belt, has the Aux belt ever been replaced?

 

if it has a alternator with a pulley type like this one http://www.auto24parts.com/environm...om/environment/cache/images/0_0_productGfx_0d4d346a31715824d3b2b43b46e1ec0b.jpg
then that will 100% be the noise, it makes the belt run out of line, theres a new pulley that you can get on its own from vauxhall bit of a pain to fit without the tool for it though.

 

Aux belt has never been replaced. Would that change depending on the engine temp?

Shall have a look at the alternator 2 morrow and check that out.

 

They do warm up as they run round. It's either a dry belt or dodgy pulley as mentioned.

Just eyeball down all the pulleys to check they're all running inline.

 

Well everything looks lined up and the pulley on the alternator is of a different type to the one pictured. It looks shorter with a flange either side of where the belt runs. I take it the cure for a 'dry' belt is replacement or can you do anything to it?

 

So I started the car and whilst it was making the noise I gave the belt a spray of WD40 and the noise stopped instantly. Looks like the belt is the culprit. Shall get it changed. Is it an easy DIY job? I am pretty handy with the tools but look to me like it could be difficult to do with the car on the ground.

 

I don't suppose anyone has a guide on how to change the belt? Looks like the top engine mount needs removed can this be done or does the engine need supported?

 

Sorry for the thread resurrection. Finally got round to changing the belt. Noise now gone!
